How do you train with your firearm with the current ammo shortage?

According to data from the NSSF, there were 6.2 million new gun owners in 2020. But what are the actual reasons for the ammo shortage?  Manufacturers report they are working at full capacity yet even the box stores are finding it hard to secure stock.    Some have posited that ammo is in short supply because we just got through another election, the COVID 19 pandemic has practically shut down the nation’s economy, and there is civil unrest throughout the United States. Whatever the case may be, demand is heavy and inventory low and the ammo shortage is predicted to last well through 2021.

So how should new or existing gun owners get in much needed marksmanship training with very little to no ammo available?  Enter marksmanship training systems or simulation training using laser versus live bullets. These systems are used by Federal Agencies such as Homeland Security, Federal Air Marshalls and the ATF.  Law Enforcement at the state and local level use these too to train regularly.  There are plenty of economical versions that can be used at home or in an office (or station).  The advantage of training at home is that you are rehearsing precisely where you’ll need it the most.  This will keep you from panicking and will enable you to make the right judgement call if you need to protect yourself or your family.

Here’s other advantages:

  • Train with your own gun.  Use dry fire training to reinforce your shooting skills
  • Train in privacy, at your convenience, and, in the case of home use, where you’ll need it the most
  • Train in safety and create your own scenarios
  • You can fire at a target from any angle, allowing for greater practice
  • Since your gun is not tethered, you can move around to use cover when engaging the ‘target’

All you need to set up a simulation system at home or in the office is a PC or laptop, and your own firearm (with laser transmitter).  Rehearsing what you would do in the case of a dangerous scenario, will keep you and those who surround you safe.  Practice makes perfect. Since ammo is in such short supply these systems make sense now more than ever.
